Sonnenberg  – Zurich’s Panorama Terrace

Sonnenberg, often referred to as the Fifa Canteen has become an institution in Zurich. The hotel is located in Zurichs’ swanky Zurichberg region and offers a breathtaking view of the city. At the entrance, guests are welcomed by the service staff and led to their tables in the dining room.

Ambiance: The dining room is relatively small and hosts roughly 10 tables. The room is dimly lit with large tables situated at the panorama window front. The tables are spacious and the many candles create a romantic and peaceful ambiance. Sonnenberg’s interior is understated and unostentatious and it seems it deliberately does no try to compete with the restaurant’s fantastic view. The room is a mix of beige colors and bright wooden panels. The unusual subtleness creates a pleasant however standardized atmosphere which you would expect from a hotel restaurant. On a friday evening the restaurant is moderately busy and half the tables are occupied.

Menu: The menu consists of a good selection of Swiss classics such as Veal Stew and some signature dishes such as the veal cutlet a la “Jacky” and more elaborate dishes such as Garganelli with truffle and egg sabayon. The amuse bouche with lobster salad and minted mango is mouth wateringly delicious and signals that Sonnenber’ss chef Jacky Donatz is up for some serious cooking.

We opt for a classic lamb salad with egg and big serving of bacon (referred to as the” Fifa salad”) and the autumn salad with grapes which is well seasoned. The mushroom strudel is simple but nicely presented and the serving is enormous. The cordon bleu is juicy and just how it should be and comes with a side dish as per your choice. We opt for Spätzle.The sheer size of servings unfortunately leaves no room for desert however order a coffee which comes with a delicious selection of pastry.

The service at Sonnenberg is simply excellent and need not shy away from comparison with Zurich’s Michelin starred restaurants. Hanspeter, our waiter of the evening is very friendly and attentive.

Conclusion: Sonnenberg offers the perfect setting for a quiet and relaxed evening with a beautiful view.
